Father Son Fishing: Hatchet Lake Lodge

Looks like lunch to me!

The summer after my first year in college, my dad and I finally took the father son fishing trip that we’d been planning for several years.  We both knew that we’d want the opportunity to spend some time together for some father son bonding after my first year living away from home and we’d both talked a lot about how we wanted to go on a real fishing trip out in the wilderness.

Hatchet Lake Lodge overdelivers on everything that they promise.  We arrived on their private plane, flying in from Manitoba and immediately knew that we were in a different world.  The lodge was handsomely furnished and decorated like your typical hunting lodge, with plenty of outdoor seating areas to enjoy the scenery of the Saskatchewan wilderness, hundreds of miles from any city.

And yes, the focus was without question on fishing.  Everyone there had come to fish and part of the trip included daily guided trips out on the lake.  My dad and I had our own boat and guide which gave us plenty of opportunity to just be in each other’s company and have some real father son bonding.  Now, my dad and I are no expert fishermen by any stretch but even so, we caught more than enough fish to keep us feeling competent, and not just little dinky sunfish! These were 20-40″ Bass and lake trout.  We even were able to catch our own lunch (fried fish and chips! yum!) every day that we were out there.  More expert fishermen have the option of bringing their own gear, and organizing special fly outs to truly remote lakes.

If you know you want to have some fun fishing, but are scared that several days on a boat all day will bore you silly, don’t worry.  Hatchet Lake is anything but boring, even when you’ve had your fill of fishing.  The wilderness out in northern Saskatchewan is a truly amazing area.  We saw more bald eagles than I have ever encountered, countless hawks and even a black bear!  Even the weather inspired us to take photo upon photo with the severe interplay of clouds, sun, wind, trees and water.

The only problem with doing your father son fishing at Hatchet Lake Lodge? The mosquitos are brutal at dusk! Bring your deet, long clothes and whatever else it takes so that you can enjoy being outside and not be slapping yourself silly the entire time!
